In May, after Middlesex University in north London announced plans to close its philosophy department due to government budget cuts, students occupied the philosophy building for 12 days, unfurling a red-and-white banner that said "The University is a Factory! Strike! Occupy!" The protest, which ended after a court granted the university an injunction, prompted Middlesex to suspend several students and two professors. Noam Chomsky and other leading intellectuals have written letters of protest.
