University of Minnesota class cuts, layoffs are in the works - Doug Belden, Pioneer Press

Cutting nearly $60 million will mean fewer class sections and programs, lower enrollment and hundreds of job cuts at the University of Minnesota for next year, officials said Friday. The impact is expected to be less than in the current year, when a $95 million cut meant more than 1,200 job reductions, including about 370 layoffs. But the cuts are significant and "will affect the very culture of the University of Minnesota," said U President Robert Bruininks. Taking the two years together, "it's the worst hit we've had since the 1930s," Bruininks said.
