Community colleges sweat budget cuts - Matthew McGowan, Lubbock Online
A dour state financial outlook has university administrators across Texas struggling to stretch their dollars, but the bad news comes at a particularly inopportune time for Texas' rapidly growing community colleges. Gov. Rick Perry has asked a variety of state institutions, including universities and community colleges, to prepare for a tighter state-funding model in the next biennium as state lawmakers grapple with an $18 billion deficit. Most of these institutions were already bracing for a 5 percent reduction last month when another grim announcement arrived from Austin: Perry was asking agencies to shave an additional 10 percent from their state funding projections.
