Four in five universities in UK budget squeeze - Nick Collins, the Telegraph

Forty per cent of universities and colleges will receive less government funding than last year, while a further forty per cent will see their grant rise below the rate of inflation - an effective cut. Just one in five will be given an increase in funding above five per cent, which is the current rate of inflation according to the Retail Prices Index. The core government grant to universities and further education colleges this year will total £7.4 billion, the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) said - an increase of £21 million from estimates made in March. But of the 130 universities funded by HEFCE, 51 will receive less cash than last year with teaching funding down by £82 million.
