University of Alberta Prof. Chris Hale returned from a conference this spring to find his office phone missing. It fell victim to budget cuts. “Most people, when I tell them this, they break down laughing,” said Hale, who has taught Scandinavian languages and history at the university for 40 years. “But when it comes to having people contact me and to the visibility of the program, it’s a real problem. It’s a serious move to take away someone’s phone like that.”
