The cost-cutting measures floated by LSU officials in response to a possible 23 percent reduction in state funding next year should be a cause of grave concern for everyone in Louisiana. Other universities around the state, including Southern University, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and Southeastern Louisiana University, also are confronting painful budget cuts. Cuts proposed for those universities worry us, too. LSU’s status as the state’s flagship university should create an additional sense of urgency as it faces the budget ax. If LSU is crippled, Louisiana’s hopes for future prosperity will be crippled, too.
