St. Cloud State University announced Wednesday that layoff notices have been sent to 26 probationary faculty as part of an effort to eliminate 80-90 faculty positions for the 2011 school year. The notices had to be sent by Aug. 1 per union contracts and to allow any layoffs to happen at the end of this academic year. The 26 faculty who received notices aren’t all necessarily going to lose their jobs, said Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Devinder Malhotra. If all 26 are laid off, the university is expected to save slightly more than $2 million.
