Budget cuts threat to music, language and classics classes - Anna Davis, London Evening Standard

Music, classics and language classes could be dropped by schools struggling to cope with budget cuts, headteachers claimed today. They fear that subjects taken by small numbers of pupils will be at risk. Some heads may save money by sharing classes with other schools, meaning pupils will be forced to travel to lessons, said Brian Lightman, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders. Schools will come under scrutiny as the Government announces the outcome of its comprehensive spending review next month. Mr Lightman said schools are being advised to “look at all the options” to save money. He added: “Languages in some schools will be vulnerable. We are already worried about them and this could speed up the decline.”
