No layoffs for Foothill-De Anza; budget includes funds to save jobs for at least a year - Diana Samuels, Mercury News

The Foothill-De Anza Community College District expects to end the next fiscal year with just enough money to prevent layoffs -- as long as the state budget holds no major surprises. At a public hearing on the 2010-11 budget Monday night, officials said the district expects to finish the year with about $2.3 million in extra revenue over expenses. Former Interim Chancellor Mike Brandy said the budget, which has a general fund totaling $180 million, would give the district a "modest cushion" through 2011-12. The district already cut about $10.6 million in expenses for 2010-11, including 34 full-time and 39 classified hourly positions, all of which were vacant.
