UL board delays decision - JORDAN BLUM, the Advocate
The University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors delayed decision Friday on a proposal that critics said would render faculty tenure “meaningless.” UL System President Randy Moffett said he submitted the proposal as a response to ongoing state budget cuts to higher education, not as an attack on faculty tenure. The proposed policy changes would allow for layoffs of tenured faculty in cases where academic program “reductions” are made. The current rule allows layoffs when programs are entirely terminated. Tenured faculty also can be terminated if colleges declare a state of emergency, called financial exigency. Also, tenured faculty could be laid off with one semester of notice, instead of a full year, under the proposed policy.
