The first wave of fiscal 2012 budget cuts rolled through the University of Southern Mississippi at the end of last week. Now questions abound as to what the next tide will bring. Will there be furloughs? How many staff positions will be eliminated? How many more faculty positions will be cut? The price already has been steep. Twenty-nine faculty members, including 14 tenured full and associate professors, have been notified they will be terminated for the 2011-12 academic year. Southern Miss has 751 full-time faculty members.
