The outpouring of sympathy and outrage hoped for by the organizers of the Cheyney University walkout doesn’t seem to be materializing. Gov. Tom Corbett’s proposed budget plans to cut spending on the state university system in half, from $465.2 million to $232.6 million. There have been student protests at system universities across the state. At Cheyney, student government president Chris Carter told an assembled crowd, “If the budget really goes through, a lot of the students won’t be able to come back here.”He’s probably right. It will certainly put a greater financial strain on them and their families.
