As successful as Oklahoma City University has been in all of its sports programs, it is not immune to budget reduction plans. OCU athletic director Jim Abbott said the NAIA school will drop its men’s and women’s track and field teams after just three years of existence. “When the university budget committee says cuts need to be made, athletics is going to be looked at,” Abbott said. “I really hate it for the kids involved, but it is what it is.” OCU’s athletic department has 38 national championships and the track and field teams, despite their infancy, had just started to contribute to that total.
