Budget crunch has UD looking for cutbacks - WADE MALCOLM, News Journal
By far, the largest expense on UD's ledger is its faculty. "We have to look at those costs, including salary, over the short and long terms," he said to a lecture hall of about 400 professors. The remarks left many professors wondering what changes lie ahead for the faculty and whether those changes will harm the quality of instruction. Harker created a "budget working group" to identify cost-cutting ideas, which will include looking for underutilized or redundant programs to target for elimination or consolidation. And a recently implemented budget system is set up to reward more profitable academic departments, putting a strain on disciplines that require smaller class sizes, such as music classes or writing-intensive courses.
