Canadian university to slash 500 students to balance budget - Jen Gerson, Calgary Herald

Enrollment at the University of Calgary is expected to be cut by as many as 500 students the school announced Tuesday as it posted a balanced budget and a nominal tuition fee hike. After staring down an almost $50-million deficit over the past few years, the school is now in the black due to a two per cent increase to the school’s base grant. It has also opted to increase tuition by 1.45 per cent, or about $76 per student — the maximum amount allowed by law. Tuition hikes are capped to inflation in Alberta. To help keep the books in order, the university will be cutting enrolment by between 300 and 500 students.
