Pennsylvania lawmakers question cuts for state-owned universities - John L. Micek, Call

The family around the dinner table that's making the tough calls on where to spend their hard-earned cash. It's the budget season image of choice, favored by the most junior state lawmaker to Gov. Tom Corbett himself. But now there's a new image: The college student, fretting alone in his dorm, trying to figure out how to come up with another year of tuition. For that, thank West Chester University student Leonard Altieri, who told state lawmakers Tuesday that, because of state spending cuts and increases in tuition, students at Pennsylvania's 14 state-owned universities find themselves making the same wrenching decisions as that archetypical working family.
