FAU may close Fort Lauderdale tower - Scott Travis, Sun Sentinel

Florida Atlantic University may shutter its downtown Fort Lauderdale tower next year and move programs to Davie or Boca Raton as part of a $10.6 million cost-cutting proposal unveiled Thursday. Also affected: the university's Treasure Coast campus in Port St. Lucie, which would close by July 1, and the Dania Beach SeaTech campus, which would lose all its $239,000 in state funding and have to operate solely on research grants and other private funds. FAU officials say $24.7 million in state funding cuts mean they can no longer afford to operate all seven campuses. The Fort Lauderdale closure would save about $1.9 million a year and the Treasure Coast $1.7 million. FAU is also using summer school cuts, operation efficiencies, across-the-board departmental cuts, reserves and tuition increases to fill the budget holes.
