Suggested budget reductions make life difficult for UW - PETER BAUMANN, Laramie Boomerang

If the University of Wyoming is forced to act upon an 8 percent budget reduction exercise requested by Gov. Matt Mead of all state agencies, it will likely mean employee reductions and less scholarship, research and other opportunities for students in order to reach the required $15.66 million in cuts, UW’s Director of Government and Community Affairs Don Richards told trustees Thursday. “We have a principle of reducing non-personnel areas first, but I will tell you, our budget is 70 and in some areas 80 percent personnel-related, so it is very difficult to have an 8 percent budget reduction without impacting personnel,” Richards said. But budget reduction discussions are only beginning at UW, meaning that nothing is definite yet, Richards added.
