Board members have begun studying the budget for fiscal year 2012-13, which projects general fund revenue of $68.3million and $70.2million in general fund spending, and they say they're worried that cuts at the state level in combination with declining revenue from local taxes and donations could be costly for the area. "In our community, we need a community college district," said board member John Futch. "We need an educated community to even think about an economically strong one, and we're being forced to cut courses, which means we cut (students)." The colleges don't plan to stop offering any subjects. But class sections have steadily declined from about 5,000 in 2009 to 3,500 this year, Baron said, meaning some classes are full or only offered one semester per year.
