USI turns to student fees to make up for dwindling state support - John Martin, Courier Press

As state support for higher education has dwindled, the University of Southern Indiana has become more reliant on student fee revenue to make its budget. USI trustees on Thursday approved a $96.2 million operating budget for Fiscal Year 2013. The budget is about $2.5 million more than its 2012 level. About 54 percent of the operating budget is covered by state appropriations, compared to more than 60 percent five years ago. Student costs are covering much of the difference. The 2013 budget has no salary increases. President Linda Bennett said USI is prioritizing unavoidable increases in utilities and health insurance costs.
