Fayetteville State University is likely to decline a donated $5 million particle accelerator because budget cuts won't allow the school to transport, set up and store the equipment. FSU is cutting its budget by 3.5 percent, about $2.1 million, in the 2012-13 academic year because of declining enrollment, Chancellor James A. Anderson said in a news release. He attributed the lower enrollment to the school's decision to raise academic standards and to a declining economy. The Naval Research Laboratory in Washington was going to donate the accelerator and $3 million in other equipment to FSU because the laboratory is moving to a new facility that is not large enough for the accelerator. FSU competed with several other universities for the instruments.
