Harvard's annual endowment spend tops NEU's entire budget and then some - Galen Moore, Boston Business Journal

Harvard University's endowment is worth $32 billion. The amount the university spends out of its endowment dwarfs its own tuition revenue and the annual operating revenues of several rival Boston-area colleges and universities. Harvard University may be tightening its belt – but the school's endowment spend alone still dwarfs its own tuition revenues and the entire annual operating revenue of many among the largest universities in Massachusetts. Harvard's endowment is worth $32 billion, and the university pulls out about $1.2 billion per year for operations, the Wall Street Journal reported. That's about a third of Harvard's annual operating revenues, and the equivalent sum could underwrite the annual operations of:
  • Nearly 1.5 Northeastern Universities (fiscal 2011 operating revenue: $842 million)
  • Two UMass Amhersts (fiscal 2011 operating revenue: $600.1 million)
  • Nearly 2 Boston Colleges (fiscal 2011 operating revenue: $643.65 million)
  • Three quarters of Boston University (fiscal 2011 operating revenue: $1.65 billion)
