Merced College acting now in case state's tax plan fails - YESENIA AMARO, Merced Sun Star

Merced College officials are bracing for the worst, but hoping for the best as they deal with ongoing state budget uncertainty.
If Gov. Jerry Brown's November tax initiative fails to be approved by voters, the college would have to slash its budget further, Merced College officials said recently. Community colleges have been operating with $996 million, or 23 percent, less in total program support in the past year (2011-12) than they had in 2007-08, according to new Merced College President Ron Taylor. Taylor will be meeting with staff in the coming weeks to begin conversations anticipating the worst so the college is prepared. It takes a lot of work to make reductions in an effective way, he said.
