Nicholls State University dealing with millions in state cuts - Maya Rodriguez, WWL

Nicholls State University's campus remains relatively quiet in the heat of summer. Simmering beneath the surface, though, is a struggle for balance -- a budget balance.
"We're a smaller institution, it becomes harder to do it," said Dr. Stephen Hulbert, president of Nicholls State University.With a new school year on the horizon, public colleges and universities in Louisiana are grappling with how to best deal with deep state budget cuts. Nicholls is no exception: the university is laying off 28 employees and eliminating another 65 positions that are currently vacant. It is all part of dealing with a more than $5 million reduction in funding this year.
