Merced College began its new academic year Monday under a new president who faces challenges arising from its accreditation and ongoing state budget problems.
Ron Taylor, 61, Merced College's new president, takes over at a difficult time because the college has been on "warning status" from the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges for a year. Officials have until March to resolve those issues and get the college's accreditation back on track. Merced College, like other community colleges in the state, also has had to slash its budget in recent years and could face more cutbacks later this academic year depending on what happens with the state budget.
