UGA plans to cut about 150 jobs in response to budget cuts - Jamie Gottlieb, Red and Black

The University plans to cut about 150 jobs to fulfill Gov. Nathan Deal’s state budget cuts and the Board of Regent’s 3 percent budget cuts this year, according to the University’s fiscal year 2013 and fiscal year 2014 reduction plans. The budget cuts total to about $15.4 million, according to the document. John Millsaps, Board of Regents spokesman, said each university’s 3 percent budget cut stems from the lack of state revenue to cover the existing budget. The revenue from August rose 1.9 percent, but that number is not high enough to sustain the state’s budget. “We’ve been in an economic downtrend, and the economy has been very slow in Georgia,” he said. “The governor’s office is watching the state revenue protection very closely.”
