Bethlehem mayor pushes back at Lehigh University, city council - Lynn Olanhoff, Lehigh Express Times

His criticism of Lehigh focused on the university not giving a financial contribution to the city as many smaller colleges do in their hometowns. Callahan’s also hoping for contributions from Moravian College, Northampton Community College and Lehigh Valley Health Network totaling $1 million for next year, but he specifically today called out Lehigh. “I think it’s fair and appropriate to ask Lehigh University — the largest property owner in the city of Bethlehem with over $1 billion in endowment — to assist the community that they’re in,” Callahan said. The city’s colleges and hospital are tax exempt and Callahan said he’s been pushing Lehigh for years to give a financial contribution to the city similar to what many Pennsylvania colleges and colleges across the country do. http://www.lehighvalleylive.com/bethlehem/index.ssf/2012/11/bethlehe_mayor_pushes_back_at.html
