Community college trustees get budget update - DAYNA STRAEHLEY, Press-Enterprise
State budget cuts have forced the Riverside Community College District to cut the numbers of classes offered substantially, despite surging student demand, according to a budget update. The district Board of Trustees, meeting at Moreno Valley College, received the quarterly update Tuesday evening, Nov. 20, without comment. The district also includes Riverside City and Norco colleges. The district has cut discretionary expenses, imposed a hiring freeze and layoffs, and used one-time sources to cover some of the loss of state funding, according to the financial status report. In addition to cutting funding, the state has postponed payments of some of the money it has promised California’s community colleges, causing cash-flow shortages, says the report prepared by Jim Buysse, vice chancellor for administration and finance, and Bill Bogle, controller. The report anticipates further reductions and delayed payments in 2013-14.
