University Budgets Slashed - the Link Quebec

Québécois government announced cuts of $124 million to universities on Thursday, as part of its plan for a balanced budget in 2013-2014. According to a letter penned by Concordia president Alan Shepard, the finance minister’s announcement is “disappointing.” The university estimates that the cuts will mean an approximately $11.5-million loss to its operating grant. This number does not comprise the $3 million that Concordia expects to receive in compensation for 2012-2013’s cancelled fee increase. In the letter, Shepard said that Concordia would “begin a series of conversations on our budget challenges” in January. Quebec’s budget documents show that the most substantial cuts in the Ministère de l’Enseignement supérieur, de la Recherche, de la Science er de la Technologie for 2013-2014 will be in the areas of support for science, research and innovation (-8.6 per cent) and funding for organisations dedicated to research and innovation (-12,9 per cent). http://thelinknewspaper.ca/article/3764
