Play a Sport, Get an iPad: UMD Student Athletes Receive Free Tech Amid School Budget Cuts - Molly Greenberg, in the Capital
After eliminating seven varsity sports due to a $4.6 million dollar budget deficit for FY 2011, you’d think the University of Maryland would have better things to do with the little money they have left to spare than spend it on free iPads for student athletes. Apparently not. According to school spokesman Zack Bolno, the athletics department has handed out 504 iPads costing the university approximately $300,000. The high tech gifts to those athletically adept will “assist with [students'] educational endeavors,” perfect for road trips.
