The University of Alberta will ask the Redford government for permission to run a big deficit as it struggles to cope with budget cuts. U of A acting Provost Martin Ferguson-Pell says because of "the dramatic cut in funding, coupled with restrictions on tuition and continued low interest rates" the university intends to run a deficit of almost 45-million dollars in the coming year. He adds in a post to the University's blog: "Our aim is to cut $28 million through a combination of faculty, central administrative unit, and differential line-item cuts."
