WIU to cut $4.5M from FY '14 budget - McDonough Voice

Western Illinois University will cut $4.5 million from the 2013-14 fiscal year budget, and during two public presentations held Tuesday WIU president Jack Thomas presented details to university employees. Thomas said the university has so far been able to avoid layoffs and furloughs, but because of the decline in state appropriations for WIU — $7.7 million over the last five years — delayed appropriation payments and upcoming salary increases, budget cuts must be made. "One of the advantages of the past few years is that we haven't had any layoffs, we haven't had any furloughs, and we feel we've been very fiscally responsible and practice sound fiscal management for this institution," he said. Other revenue challenges faced by the university, Thomas said, are declines in enrollment and retention, challenges that other universities are also dealing with. http://www.mcdonoughvoice.com/article/20130516/NEWS/130519497
