EMU President Susan Martin reaffirms lecturer layoffs are result of declining enrollment - Print Katrease Stafford, YPSILANTI NEWS

Eastern Michigan University President Susan Martin has reiterated the university's decision to layoff several full-time lecturers within the College of Education was in response to a trend of declining enrollment. "Over the past nine years, enrollment in the College of Education has declined by more than 1,400 students, from 4,697 in 2005 to 3,214 in 2013 – as students transition from pursuing teaching degrees to degrees in other fields, such as the sciences, health, business, arts and technology," Martin said in a campus wide email on Wednesday. "This trend is being echoed at education programs throughout the state and nation." http://www.mlive.com/news/ann-arbor/index.ssf/2014/02/emu_president_susan_martin_say.html
