MUSC board rejects CofC merger proposal - ANDREW SHAIN, the State

Medical University of South Carolina trustees voted unanimously Thursday on a resolution opposing a merger with the College of Charleston proposed by state legislators, a school spokeswoman said. If approved, the bill introduced in the S.C. House would combine the schools to create Charleston University by 2016. MUSC leadership has expressed heavy reservations about losing the medical school's identity in creating the state's third large research university. The interim president also told lawmakers that the merger talk is hurting the search for a successor. One MUSC trustee, Michael Stavrinakis, abstained in the vote Thursday.
