How to enhance Obama's plan for the feds to rate U.S. colleges - Chicago Tribune Editorial
We hope the president blows past college officials who say their product is too precious to be measured. We hope his team finds a reliable way to help students and their families maximize the data about schools and thus maximize their odds of earning degrees. Of succeeding. But we also hope Obama sees how federal subsidies, with each Congress and president seeking voter-friendly ways to "make college affordable," helped inflate this diabolical bubble. One way to stop college costs — and debts — from rising is for Washington to stop recklessly stoking demand. Another is to give colleges serious reasons to be careful about letting young people pay those costs and incur those debts.
