The University of Akron had a choice in the way it approached repairing its finances. It could move more gradually, reductions in spending and staffing spread across a longer time frame. That might have eased the pain and anguish of the past week, the school, among other things, eliminating more than 200 positions. Such a course also would bring chronic uncertainty, departments and offices wondering: Will we be next? As a result, university officials chose to move more rapidly.
