Proposed budget cuts will cost LCPS, NMSU - Damien Willis , Las Cruces Sun-News

Educators in Las Cruces are preparing to make cuts as the revised state budget that sits on the desk of Gov. Susana Martinez, waiting to be signed. The bills will reduce funding for public schools and the state’s colleges and universities if signed into law. The final version of the cuts, approved Thursday afternoon during a special session of the Legislature, will reduce public school funding by $89 million — or about 2.6 percent. The Legislature also approved a 5 percent cut to the Higher Education Department, affecting colleges and universities around the state. The reductions in state agency spending are necessary to combat a downturn in oil and natural gas markets, which the state relies upon to fund operations. http://www.lcsun-news.com/story/news/education/2016/10/07/proposed-budget-cuts-cost-lcps-nmsu/91753144/
