Missouri State U bracing for 'more difficult than usual' budget decisions next year - Claudette Riley, News-Leader
Sugarcoating was not an option Friday when Missouri State President Clif Smart talked about next year's budget. Smart told the Board of Governors the fast-growing university is braced to make "more difficult than usual" decisions regarding its 2018-19 spending plan. "We expect a hard year next year," he said. "...No one is telling us it's going to be a good year — zero." With tax changes kicking in, there is uncertainty about the state budget, and the amount available to fund higher education — and many other areas — cannot be determined until after the state adjusts its spending plan to absorb growing Medicaid expenses and other mandatory costs.
