UMC fights for funding as state lawmakers battle budget woes UMC takes its fight for state funding to the public - Heath Allen, WDSU

University Medical Center in New Orleans is taking its fight for state funding to the public as lawmakers continue to figure out how to bridge a massive budget gap. Hospital officials are urging people to learn about UMC and why it's vital for the community. The hospital in Mid-City has more than 2,500 employees and a $600 million economic impact. "Cutting services or laying off employees would be a setback for the health and well-being of our community," said UMC CEO Bill Masterton. UMC's future is in the hands of state lawmakers who have been unable to solve the budget crisis through a series of regular and special legislative sessions. Gov. John Bel Edwards warned that the hospital could be forced to close its doors if lawmakers cannot find the money. http://www.wdsu.com/article/umc-funding-fight/20902787
