Earlier this year, UNM regents voted, for a second time in a matter of weeks, to cut four sports teams including men’s soccer, women’s beach volleyball and both ski teams. The move, administrators said, would save the university $1.1 million, including more than $460,000 that would have been doled out in scholarships. However, Andy Schwarz, a sports economist, said the controversial cuts are actually going to cost the school money.
