Tuesday, the UF Board of Trustees approved a draft policy that authorizes the university to furlough employees if administrators deem it necessary, though there are no immediate plans to implement the unpaid leave. “It’s another tool we have in our toolbox to avoid layoffs,” UF spokesman Steve Orlando explained after the meeting. Furloughs, the policy reads, are a “proportionate response” to adverse conditions in lieu of layoffs or other separations from employment.
