For UR, federal budget battle carries high stakes - Tom Tobin, Democrat and Chronicle
The indiscriminate carving knife of the federal budget sequester will cut a huge swath through the University of Rochester, slashing everything from support for scientists to student aid, university officials say. “It’s a bludgeon,” UR president Joel Seligman said of the federal reductions. “The cuts to the National Institutes of Health, to Medicare, to the Graduate Medical Education program, affect the ability of research universities like ours from being a catalyst for social good and from educating the future leaders of the country.” The sequester, which refers to the budget methodology used by Congress, cuts most federal spending by 5 percent or 7 percent in every category.
