Georgia technical colleges face another big budget cut - LEE SHEARER, Online Athens
Athens Technical College and other state technical colleges might take another steep financial hit next year.
Gov. Nathan Deal’s proposed budget calls for another 10 percent cut in state funding for the system, which provides job training and basic college courses for nearly 200,000 Georgians each year. But college officials hope the Georgia House Appropriations Committee might restore at least some of the proposed cuts when the committee releases its own version of a 2013-14 state budget for today, said Technical College System of Georgia Commissioner Ron Jackson last week.Funding for the University System of Georgia also was reduced, but not as much as for the 25 technical colleges, which have had an especially bumpy ride after the long recession of 2008 set in.
