After nearly 100 years, budget cuts could mean radio silence for stations near Fort Collins - Kevin Duggan, Fort Collins Coloradoan

Proposed budget cuts could silence radio stations operated by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, or NIST, north of Fort Collins that continuously broadcast the time of day. The possible shutdown of WWV and companion station WWVb, which sends a time signal picked up by self-setting “atomic” clocks, wristwatches and other devices, has alarmed the amateur radio community. President Trump’s budget request to Congress for fiscal year 2019 called for a $49 million reduction in NIST spending on core measurement programs from fiscal year 2018 levels, including a $6.3 million cut to “fundamental measurement dissemination.” That includes shutting down the Fort Collins radio stations and similar facilities in Hawaii. Other proposed cuts to NIST include ending programs related to studying climate change and measuring greenhouse gas emissions. https://www.coloradoan.com/story/news/2018/09/22/fort-collins-budget-cuts-time-day-radio-broadcasts-could-go-silent/1352761002/
