MSU moves ahead with plan to slash programs - ROBIN ERB, Detroit Free Press

Katie Sweers found her passion among the course offerings at Michigan State University: deaf education -- teaching hearing-impaired youngsters how to communicate, in large part, through American Sign Language. "I can't imagine not doing this," said the Almont woman, who transferred from Macomb Community College this fall to MSU. But MSU is now trapped in a budget squeeze, and Sweers' program is on the chopping block. So are more than a dozen other programs, majors and specializations. Current students will be able to finish their coursework, but the long approval process has begun.
