Leaders at area colleges and universities are scouring for funds in budgets that are nearly depleted while they await word from Baton Rouge about how much money they will have to cut to plug a budget shortfall in the last 10 weeks of the fiscal year. House Appropriations Chairman Jim Fannin, D-Jonesboro, said although Gov. Bobby Jindal's proposed budget for the next fiscal year spares higher education from further cuts, higher education is not likely to be spared from the second round of midyear cuts to close a projected $319 million deficit.
