Local institutions of higher education could be facing multimillion-dollar budget cuts as the Louisiana Legislature battles over the state’s budget. Should House Bill 1, the state’s budget for next year, pass as it is now, Nicholls State University would face $7.7 million in cuts, while Fletcher Technical Community College would lose $959,000. Leaders at those institutions say the cutbacks, which could be larger than any of those handed down over the past few years, could spell disaster.
