State universities brace for budget cuts - WDSU, New Orleans

"As the saying goes, we've already cut to the bone. Now, we've got to start removing a bone here," University of New Orleans spokesman Mike Rivault said. Officials said the four-year college is slated to lose $15.6 million in state funding, which is the largest reduction since state cuts began in 2008. University officials said UNO has tried to offset its loses every year by increasing the tuition by 25 percent, laying off 50 staff members and leaving 100 positions vacant. Rivault said more cuts are expected. "There will be almost assuredly be furloughs of staff and faculty, possibly layoffs, and there could be a host of other things that go as deep as removing certain academic programs," Rivault said. Meanwhile, the Southern University of New Orleans is possibly facing a $2.6 million cut, which officials said would lead to class reductions, fewer degree programs and massive layoffs.
